Keeping Transparent Phone Cases Clean

Keeping Transparent Phone Cases Clean

Transparent phone cases are a great choice for smartphone users who desire the added protection of a case without having to give up too much form factor. Initially, a transparent case looks perfect, lacking a single sign of a blemish or scratch. But many owners find that over time, transparent smartphone cases start to look dingy. They increasingly become covered in scratches and smudges and the once colorless plastic gradually develops a yellow hue. But don't worry, not all these changes are inevitable or irreversible. Here are four ways to keep your transparent case clean longer.

KEEP KEYS AWAY

One of the simplest ways to minimize case micro scratching is to avoid keeping your phone in the same pocket as keys or other metal objects. As you move around throughout the day, such metal objects will inevitably rub up against your smartphone case and from this, scratches occur.

SOAP AND WATER

Regularly removing your phone case and gently scrubbing the interior and exterior with soap and water will help lift dirt, smudges, and oil off the plastic, keeping your case cleaner for longer. Unfortunately, soap and water will do little to undo a transparent case which has developed a yellow hue as this color shift is generally caused by UV damage and oxidation which soap and water cannot fix.

ALCOHOL OR BLEACH WATER

For troublesome stains that refuse to be removed by soap and water, alcohol is an excellent and powerful cleaning alternative. A clear spirit with a high ABV such as vodka will work best. For an even more powerful cleaning agent, one can use bleach water. While bleach water generally cannot fully undo a yellow hue, bleach does have inherent whitening properties and can lighten the color of a case. Be sure to dilute the bleach with plenty of water and wear gloves whenever working with the liquid as it can be dangerous.

KEEP YOUR PHONE OUT OF THE SUN

One of the primary causes of a phone case turning yellow is damage from ultraviolet radiation. A simple method to minimize this damage is not to leave your phone out in the sun. In particular, do not leave your phone flipped over with the transparent case allowed to bathe in sunlight.

Overall, scratches, smudges, and stains on a transparent smartphone case can all be prevented or treated with proper care. On the other hand, the gradual yellowing of the plastic cannot fully be prevented or fixed; however, keeping a phone case out of harsh sunlight and using bleach water can help work to keep a case transparent and colorless longer.
