MagSafe Explained: Everything You Need to Know About Magnetic iPhone Cases
Choosing a case for wireless charging? Start with two separate questions: can your phone charge through the case, and does the case support magnetic attachment? A product can support wireless charging without containing magnets for a snap-on wallet, stand, or charger.
Wireless charging and magnetic attachment
A conventional Qi charging pad transfers power wirelessly when a compatible phone is positioned correctly. A case described as “wireless charging compatible” may allow this, but that wording alone does not confirm built-in magnets or reliable attachment to magnetic accessories.
Apple's MagSafe system combines wireless charging with magnetic alignment on supported iPhones. A case designed with compatible magnets can help a suitable accessory line up through the case. The phone, case, and accessory still need to be compatible with one another.
Check your exact phone's specifications. MagSafe support is model-specific; don't assume every newer iPhone or every case in an iPhone collection has the same features. Apple's MagSafe Charger guide explains supported charging combinations and why actual power depends on the phone, power adapter, and conditions.
Which case should you choose?
- You use a flat charging pad: look for wireless-charging support in the individual case description and follow your charger manufacturer's positioning instructions.
- You use a magnetic wallet or stand: look for an explicit description of magnets or magnetic accessory compatibility. Wireless-charging support alone is insufficient evidence.
- You use a magnetic car mount: verify the mount's compatibility instructions and the case's magnetic construction. We don't claim a universal holding strength or guarantee attachment over bumps.
- You charge by cable: prioritize exact model fit, accessible ports, and the finish you prefer. Magnets are an optional feature for your accessory setup.
How to read a Shamo's product page
Our catalog includes different case constructions. Check the description and select your exact phone model before adding a case to your cart. A collection's name or a printed ring design is not enough to confirm magnetic functionality.
For examples of listings that describe magnetic accessory support, see the Golden Retriever design, which lists embedded magnets, or the Peach Pattern design, which describes MagSafe accessory compatibility. Check the available model and finish options on each page; availability varies by design.
By comparison, the Summer design lists induction-charging compatibility. That statement does not establish magnetic wallet or mount support.
Will a magnetic case charge faster?
A case's magnets alone do not establish a charging speed or certification. Charging performance depends on the phone, charger, power adapter, alignment, temperature, and case. We do not assign a wattage to a case simply because its listing says MagSafe compatible. Check your charger's documentation for the supported setup.
If wireless charging does not start
Center the phone as the charger manufacturer instructs and check for the charging indicator. Remove a wallet, cards, or other objects between the phone and charger. Apple recommends trying without the case when a thick, metal, or battery case appears to interfere. See Apple's wireless-charging guidance for troubleshooting.
Before you buy
Use our exact phone model guide to check fit, then compare matte and glossy finishes. When browsing iPhone cases, confirm charging and accessory details on the individual listing rather than assuming they apply to the whole collection.
