How to Set Up Face ID on iPhone (And Fix It When It Stops Working)
Face ID Is One of the Best Things About iPhone — Until It Isn’t
When Face ID works, it’s seamless — glance at your phone and it’s unlocked. When it doesn’t, it’s one of the most frustrating experiences in tech. Whether you’re setting it up for the first time or troubleshooting a phone that suddenly won’t recognize your face, this guide covers everything you need to know.
🔐 How to Set Up Face ID from Scratch
What You Need Before You Start
- An iPhone X or later (Face ID is not available on older models or iPhone SE)
- Your iPhone passcode (required as a backup)
- A clean front camera — wipe it with a soft cloth before starting
- Good lighting — Face ID works in the dark, but setup works best in normal light
Open Settings and navigate to Face ID & Passcode
Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode when prompted.
Tap “Set Up Face ID”
Tap Get Started. Hold your iPhone in portrait orientation and position your face in the frame shown on screen.
Complete the first scan — move your head in a circle
Slowly move your head in a complete circle, as if you’re tracing the edge of a clock with your nose. Keep your face within the frame. The dots will fill in as the scan progresses.
Complete the second scan
After the first scan, tap Continue and repeat the circular head movement for the second scan. This gives Face ID a more complete map of your face.
Tap Done
Face ID is now set up. You can immediately test it by pressing the side button to wake your phone and looking at it — it should unlock without touching anything.
💡 Pro tip: Set up an Alternate Appearance (Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Set Up an Alternate Appearance) if you regularly wear glasses, heavy makeup, or look significantly different in certain situations. This gives Face ID a second facial map to work from.
🛠️ How to Fix Face ID When It Stops Working
Face ID can fail for a surprising number of reasons — most of them easy to fix. Here are the most common issues and exactly how to solve them.
👀 Face ID fails after wearing a mask
Enable “Face ID with a Mask” in Settings → Face ID & Passcode. This uses the area around your eyes only. Works on iPhone 12 and later.
🕶️ Face ID fails in sunglasses
Most sunglasses block the infrared scan. Either remove them or enable “Face ID with a Mask” which relies less on the lower face.
📷 Front camera is dirty or blocked
Wipe the TrueDepth camera area (top notch or Dynamic Island) with a clean, dry cloth. Even a small smudge can disrupt the infrared scan.
📱 Screen protector blocking the camera
Thick or poorly fitted screen protectors can interfere with Face ID. Make sure yours is cut precisely for your iPhone model and doesn’t cover the sensor area.
⚙️ Face ID is greyed out in Settings
This usually means a software glitch. Restart your iPhone first. If it persists, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings (this won’t delete your data).
🔄 Face ID stopped working after an iOS update
Restart your phone first. If that doesn’t work, go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID, then set it up again from scratch.
🔁 How to Reset and Re-enroll Face ID
The Nuclear Option — When Nothing Else Works
If Face ID is consistently failing and none of the quick fixes above work, resetting and re-enrolling is the most reliable solution. It takes about 2 minutes and fixes the vast majority of persistent Face ID issues.
Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode
Enter your passcode when prompted.
Tap “Reset Face ID”
This deletes all stored facial data from your iPhone. Confirm when prompted.
Clean your front camera
Before re-enrolling, wipe the TrueDepth camera area with a soft cloth. This is often the step people skip — and it makes a real difference.
Tap “Set Up Face ID” and follow the steps
Go through the full setup process again. Move slowly and deliberately during the circular scan for the best result.
Set up an Alternate Appearance
After the main setup, add an Alternate Appearance for any situations where you look significantly different (glasses, makeup, hats).
⚠️ If Face ID still doesn’t work after a reset, the issue may be hardware-related — particularly if your iPhone has been dropped or repaired. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a diagnostic. A damaged TrueDepth camera cannot be fixed with software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Face ID keep asking for my passcode?
Face ID requires your passcode in certain situations: after restarting, after 5 failed Face ID attempts, after 48 hours without unlocking, or when you press the side button and volume button together. This is a security feature, not a bug.
Can two people set up Face ID on the same iPhone?
Yes — use the main Face ID enrollment for one person and Set Up an Alternate Appearance for a second person. Note that both people will have full access to the phone.
Does Face ID work in complete darkness?
Yes. Face ID uses infrared light, not visible light, so it works in the dark. The TrueDepth camera projects invisible infrared dots onto your face regardless of ambient lighting.
Will Face ID work if I change my appearance significantly?
Face ID adapts gradually over time — it learns from successful unlocks. Major changes (new beard, significant weight change, surgery) may require a reset and re-enrollment for best results.
Does a phone case affect Face ID?
No — a properly fitted phone case doesn’t cover the TrueDepth camera and won’t affect Face ID. If your case is blocking the top sensor area, it’s the wrong case for your iPhone model.
